Walk 1:This short 7.5 mile walk takes in one of the best views in the Chilterns. Choose a good day and the view from Coombe Hill is spectacular. There are a couple of steep climbs, particularly the path from the Missenden Road up onto Coombe Hill at the end of the walk, so be warned! A meal at the Shoulder of Mutton is a good way to finish this walk. |
Walk 2:For a few weeks at the end of April and the beginning of May, parts of the Chilterns are enveloped in a stunning carpet of woodland colour. Our recommendation, make the most of it! This walk takes in Dockey Wood on the Ashridge Estate and is less than 4 miles long. Because of its popularity, the National Trust has stated charging for access to the woods during the day but get there early (before 9am) and entry is free. |
Walk 3:A long-ish walk at 11 miles but taking in plenty of quiet Chiltern woods and undisturbed villages. This is the sort of walk that captures the essence of this part of the world, for me. Don’t do this walk if you’re looking for high excitement but do if you want a flavour of the gentle side of the Chiltern countryside. |
Walk 4:From an unpromising start we’re really grown to like this part of the Chilterns. Some of the views along Bledlow Ridge towards West Wycombe are picture-postcard-perfect. Stockfield Wood had plenty of bluebells when we passed through and Radnage and its quaint church are worth a visit…build by the Knights Templar…but don’t tell Dan Brown! This walk fits nicely into a morning or an afternoon with the option for a meal in Stokenchurch on return to the car. |
Walk 5:A walk with two views, from Coombe Hill and Whiteleaf Hill. Just be warned, if you do the walk in the direction we did, the long haul to the top of Whiteleaf Hill comes last and is hard work on a hot day! Still, 12 enjoyable miles…apart from the last 0.5 mile. |
