Walk 1:Wendover Woods are great to visit any time of the year but in autumn the colours can be spectacular…any time towards the end of October or beginning of November is a good time. This 8 mile walk has a steep climb at the beginning but otherwise is flat and makes for a good morning or afternoon walk. You can pause at the Cafe in the Woods half way for refreshment. |
Walk 2:Starting in the quite village of Little Gaddesden, this walk takes in Ivinghoe Beacon and the Ashridge Estate. It’s about 8.5 miles and is a comfortable 3 hr stroll so a nice morning or afternoon walk. There is a climb up onto Ashridge and beware, on sunny weekends the Estate is popular with families and dog walkers.

Walk 3:This is a walk that you’re better off setting aside a whole day for, although there are plenty of opportunities to shorten it, particularly removing the loop from Radnage to Lodge Hill. There are some great views along Bledlow Ridge towards West Wycombe and Radnage and its ancient church, hidden away below Bledlow Ridge, are always worth visiting. The shorter autumn days make this 12 mile walk a bit of a rush for an afternoon …particularity if your legs are as short as ours. |
Walk 4:Another day walk with only one climb to speak off, up onto Ashridge Estate. The beech and ash trees were reaching their peak colours when we visited. The return along the canal provides plenty of opportunity to stop for refreshment and the canal is a nice contrast to the woods of the first part of the walk…and, of course, flat! |
Walk 5:Does this count as The Chilterns? Probably no, but it does make an excellent afternoon walk. The disused railway lines which make up a large part of this route make for easy walking. Although there are no views to speak of, there is plenty of opportunity to ‘walk and talk’, which after all is one of the best parts of getting out! A 8.5 mile which will comfortably fit into a morning or afternoon. |
